Progress report

holiday_living_room.jpg

Tree up, decorated.

Laundry, caught up.

Bread cubes (for dressing), dry.

House cleaning, begun. (Let’s face it, it’s never finished.)

Big dinner menu, ready (enough).

Package mailing, accomplished.

Gifts, needs work.

Wrapping, hah, hardly begun (see above).

Best so far: JCB and I sat quietly with the tree last evening, in the dim light, smelling the pineyness, sipping ’tinis. Life is good.

Bonus for you: no comments on legislative doin’s.

Increasing our footprint

tree_angel_posing.jpg

Angels, and elves I guess, helped us today, so now the tree’s up and decorated!

MMmmm, and smells so good….

Second…

KFK, this one’s 4U! (okay, and everyone else in attendance—what fun!)

…holiday party of the season….

Just, FYI.

Great time! Great food! Loverly!

I don’t have a good title today

leaves_autumn_late_color.jpg

Rainy rainy rainy all day until now when it’s just plain wet, drippy, and grey outside.

Inside feels almost as gloomy (“quiet, too quiet”), if drier. We need Xmas lights!

And, me? I’ve been reading about wear patterns on antlers (currently free to download—how exciting!), among other things. You see, antlers are one substance used to make stone tools, an activity which, of course, generates distinct patterns, at least theoretically, as a result of the use. Conclusion: marks on antlers from tool use can be difficult to separate from natural deer rub marks.

Meanwhile, the picture is from yesterday’s walk, of some surviving colorful leaves. Apple maybe?

BTW, anyone else tired of hearing about the blue “people” movie & from its director?

Skyline

Get it?

Anyway, another overcast afternoon, with pretty high water levels in Lake Clara Meer (it’s now hard to believe we had that drought), but nice for a walk even so.

This was the view as we strolled the SE corner of the park, having entered via an off-path route, since the Park Tavern* gate was closed—lots of private events, based on the notices up by the parking lot.

* RHB played golf here when the Tavern building was a club house, when he was in Georgia courtesy of Uncle Sam. Much of the area where we walk was fairways or on the edge of where they were. You still can see the flattop bumps where some of the greens and tees were.

Keep/alter?

Fleemans_coke_sign_oblique.jpg

I’m still annoyed that they cut those windows into the Coke sign. This was when Fleeman’s Pharmacy morphed into a hip modern (no “e”) kinda place. Actually, the HMKP was closed for a while recently—no, not because of a biz downturn—it was a mooovie set!

Yeah, I’m annoyed even though it’s not an old Coke sign; it’s an 1982 re-creation of an older style Coke sign.

See why historic preservation issues/decisions can make your head ache!

Winter signals

rosy_rose_with_droplets.jpg

We looped by the library today, in the mist (again, but warmer), so the light was crappy.

The biggest excitement during our walk had to be the huge V of sandhill cranes that cruised by overhead, yes, southbound. We heard them before we saw them, and both of us couldn’t quite place/identify the sound initially. JCB got a good shot of them, but I decided to go with a more colorful picture. This is one hardy rose.

Civic participation

river_view_dedication.jpg

View of South Fork Peachtree Creek through the woods, Morningside Nature Preserve, just after the dedication this morning.

It was pretty low-key participation, but JCB and I attended the dedication of Atlanta’s newest park, the Morningside Nature Preserve.

For being pretty darned foggy, the weather was reasonably cooperative—it wasn’t raining.

Most of the people there seemed to have participated in the making of the Preserve. There were also a few people who lived nearby.

Then: us.

John maintains that a likely journalist showed up late, but I didn’t notice.

Advance head’s-up: There’ll be a Weekly Ponder on Friday on thesga.org about this—but not until 5 am Eastern on the 18th….

Holiday hubbub (pt 1)

xmas_party_2009_genl_hubbub.jpg

Love that RJB collect canned goods (not shown) for the food bank at their holiday party…. As always, what fun!

Whatcha givin’ your attention to?

active_oval_football_practice.jpg

We did get out for a loop through Piedmont Park, and saw more activity than I had thought we’d encounter, given the cold and gloomy weather.

We saw what must have been a photography class mustering by the lake, almost twenty people with cameras, and some even with suitcases of gear. They seemed a bit disorganized.

We encountered a few exercisers, mostly solos, the mid-day crowd, I guess, who are different than the early- and late-day folks.

The dog-walker count was down, but still present.

For your visual pleasure, here’s a photo of what must have been a practice(?), in the outfield of one of the baseball diamonds in the active oval. Too cold for shirts and skins, so the guys went with the obvious. I loved this moment, when the football, otherwise the focus of the action, sat there abandoned and ignored.

Speaking of attention, I must now wrangle another triple batch of bourbon balls, and roll ’em a little smaller this time….
