This is the part of the Roman city of Graccurris, founded 179 BC, that has been “reconstructed.” I could make little architectural sense of what seemed to me to be mostly a wasteland. Of course, there was significant Medieval occupation here, too….

Rock graves seem way more difficult to dig than soil graves. Was there a reason given for why they did this? No soil, or it was too valuable for agriculture to use for dead bodies?

I tend to think it was more of a style thing: this is how we do it. Plus, with a large carved rock on top, mourners can convince themselves it’s “permanent.” Theories, anyway….
