Keep yer eyes pealed!

IKEA_Helmer_sign_tag.jpg

Honesty here: we slogged through IKEA the other day. We keep an eye on the signage to learn (ahem, poke fun at) another language, just a bit.

This product is a small, metal file-drawer storage cabinet.

And, no, we didn’t buy one. Just noted the name….

Splotchiness in the plant world

I know we only had a time change, but the sunlight seems to have a different quality in the late afternoon, which of course used to be only a slightly different late afternoon.

Here’s that warm winter light on crape myrtle trunks—these are some large specimens of Lagerstroemia spp.

Cypress becoming bald

bald_cypress_needle_drop_let.jpg

I sidestepped walking to the park today, so this is from yesterday’s visit. Autumn brings down the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) needles; most are brown, but every once in a while a green sprig comes down, too.

Sunday reflection

Grady_building_reflects_field_stadium.jpg

On today’s walk, we took an unusual route—this is most likely on Sundays, when different buildings are closed, open, busy. We cut through the parking lot of Grady HS, and wound around buildings and by the revamped stadium. I found the colors and lines of the track around the football field, sandwiched between the stands, visually interesting.

Presents/presence

UPS brought us a treat today! Clues: two users (both admin accounts), very light.

Just wait fifteen minutes…

We traipsed to the park, expecting nothing in particular in the way of excitement. We were wrong.

We discovered movie (video? whatever) shooting happening (or soon to happen) at scenic spots around the park. The Guru found lots of technical angles to check out, but we managed to avoid being in any of the shots (mainly because we didn’t walk by when the cameras were “rolling”).

That was pretty exciting, but it wasn’t all! Just after we strolled away from the park, the heavens opened, as they say. But, not so much. A few drops. We took refuge on the porch of an empty house with a building permit out front. Turns out, we saw more than rain—a few tiny (small?) sleet crystals!

And sure enough, within fifteen minutes of the rain/sleet stopping, we walked in sunshine and shed a layer or two.

Seasonal mis-matches

camellia_of_the_fall_2010.jpg

I find the weather screweeeeeee these days. We were sunny and hot, and now we’ve switched to cold and rainy (in Atlanta’s autumnal range). And yet not all the vegetation has subscribed to the lower temps. The azalea in the back yard is in glorious bloom–and we found this camellia on our walk (to Movies Worth Seeing, a still-open independent “video” rental store).

Mem-ree lane without the lane

Organ_Pipes_camping_2009.jpg

Today has been drippy with rain, and generally unpleasant for any outdoor activities, plus the temps have dropped to the lowest they’ve been since the cold burned off last spring.

The in-house temps have dropped enough that we actually (finally, some would say…) turned the heat on—at least downstairs!

So, for today’s picture I turned the calendar back one year, to discover that then we were preparing to overnight in the desert, a night that was a bit too warm for a 30°F sleeping bag. A gorgeous night!

Such a contrast!

Will the nice day here boost turnout?

All day when I was mulling today’s post, I was thinking I would not discuss the election, or even touch on it.

Then, on the way back from voting—a gorgeous day, so we walked—I saw this sign by the door to a neighborhood bar/restaurant.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t in its regular position.

I found it perfect for the day, however.

Other topics I thought about paled….

Then, just a few minutes ago, I found out that a friend is short-listed for a Real Job, which is a great and wonderous thing anytime, but especially in this economic climate. Now, in my personal micro-sphere, that news trumps the national scenario. And is contrary to the sign in the photo!

Out and about in daytime (blink blink)

The deadline we’ve been operating under around here eased today, and we escaped for a mid-day around-town wander. Of course, high on the list was a visit to the Apple Store to check out the new thin thin thin MacBook Air. Thin and light. The screen has seductive clarity. Flash drive, so quiet—I found it difficult to believe that they have the storage they do when you don’t hear the drive winding up.

No purchase today, but the appetite is whetted.
