Not in vein

Leaf backlit ABG conservatory

Sunlight and shadow. Foreground leaf and background emptiness. Somehow this seems like it’s close to being a metaphor for today.

Getting in their heads

Abg turtle sunning foot out

I’m finding it difficult not to anthropomorphize about this turtle we watched catching rays in the big pool in the orchid room at the ATL Bot Garden.

Actually, most of the sunning turtles we studied had a foot out—is this a cooling mechanism? Is this a turtle gesture that is seen by fellow turtles as the ultimate in the turtle version of James Dean cool?

The best sharp-eye moment of the decade, as I told her, was L spotting a young (and thus smaller than adult-sized) poison-dart frog in the big conservatory! Amazing! (I’ve heard ’em, but never seen them!—and I don’t mean in the frog-tanks!)

Spice o’life?

Pepper twins red n green

I’ve got to find my picking basket; these both are rehd-ee!

I did some writing today that felt good; hopefully, there’s momentum behind it. Or underneath it. Somewhere.

Not quite tongue in cheek

Prez on new jobs bill 2011

And not quite so orange, tonight.

Your move, guy on right. And your friends’.

Wonder what the details are and how the actual details—rather than rhetoric—compare to opposition statements, including the MR “Believe in America” propaganda.

Strange

2 pm actually autumnal temp

Actual temperature at 2pm.

I parked our Explorer next to another Explorer at the groc store today. That used to be easier to accomplish back before people got rebates for decommissioning their vehicles—I heard the most common model that went offline was the Explorer (but not 4x4s—that was The Law).

Anyway, the strange thing about this other Explorer was that it had a yellow cord protruding from the grill, so this vehicle had been prepped for very cold weather—and not the mid-60s we experienced today (very strange in itself).

I saw more strangeness however. I checked the vehicle license: The Aloha State, the plate said.

Rainy day

20110906-071702.jpg

We haven’t been able to say we’ve had a rainy day in a while, but we can/did today.

However, instead of presenting an interesting wet-plant photo, I am noting that my long-time favorite non-Keen sandals now are held together by a thread—well, two…the heel strap on the left….

National front angular

From Athens, Friday; the old Snow Tire recapping building has been massively repurposed…dine at The National next time you’re there…and enjoy freshness and flavor excellently blended.

Our late afternoon was too exciting as bands of rain from Stormy Lee came through. Fortunately for us, the wind and tornadoes missed our neighborhood.

Watch for lightning

Baptist church sun 2011

I went to church today.

Shocked?

Well, not quite. I did sit in a church, but I did not attend a service.

Actually, it generally bothers me that so much of a community’s resources go into building and maintaining a structure that’s used so infrequently, so I should applaud that Decatur’s First Baptist hosted presentations that were part of this year’s Decatur Book Festival.

Now, if you weren’t there, go order Rebecca’s book, Burial of a King.

Didn’t taste it

Bellavitano balsamic wheel label

So, do you take mediocre cheese and marinate it to make it something, well, unusual, if not special? Or do you choose a superior cheese to start with to make a knockout final product?

And don’t be fooled by the glitzy label, this is Wisconsin cheese….

Antioxidant gold

Gold pear tomato collection 2011 Sept

I planted the parent to this pear tomato two years back, so it has self-seeded twice. I picked almost a dozen fruits off just one of this year’s volunteers.

…when we returned from a very-fun field trip to Athens….
