Food fun and holiday prep

Lichen on wooden bench large

Bench lichen from ABG on Sunday….

Most exciting event today: making bourbon balls with TH. I used the food processor to reduce a total of eight boxes of vanilla wafers (but not nilla) to crumbs, four for us and four for TH. We both just fully processed half, so there’s another rolling stint ahead of us….

Bloomin’ mystery

Bee on ABG white fall flower thingee

Over at the ABG, even though we didn’t go in the Conservatory, we found strange non-local plants. And this one, nope, I didn’t even look at the name.

Proof: Bees still busy in December

Autumn rose with busy bee

It’s tour-of-homes weekend, and on our stroll this afternoon we saw many well-turned-out folks carrying maps clogging the sidewalks. One house with a sign and balloons advertising its listing on the tour had the front door wide open. Along the grass bordering the walk between the front porch and the driveway were tidy pairs of shoes.

Shoe sale there, the Guru said….

We bought nothing*

Pink pig CU

We have a few traditions, and a few behaviors that may be repeated enough in the future to become traditions.

One possibility in the latter category is visiting the Apple Store on our anniversary.

Today we visited the store at Lenox, and saw the Pink Pig setup, with a small herd of strollers and ambulatory munchkins out front. We stopped long enough for a few quick snaps, and continued our perambulation.

* Actually, I did place a self-satisfying order with Amazon, but, from the Apple Store, nothing. We only drooled—metaphorically—while there.

Pie run

Four glasses new light

Today I did miscellaneous activities. I most enjoyed our leftover pie distribution run to Bob’s.

Hi, Bob! Greetings and salutations!

Wish you were here!

Fresh key lime pie hot from oven

It’s nasty windy outside, with a shockingly cold edginess we haven’t experienced since last winter. Brr. We are lucky, however—preparing to dine with friends in a house extra-warmed by the oven…key lime pie for dessert!

Spirited shoes (well, boots)

Xmas lights vertical

I got in the holiday gift-giving spirit today, and bought myself a present. Is that rude?

Love leaves…

Pickled product name fun

That is, I love watching them fall, but here in the city leaves on the ground gotta be “in the right place.” At least ultimately.

When we walked to TJs (although these jars are from WF), I shuffled through the leaves caught against the low wall bordering the sidewalk. With glee!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch…

John took the backyard and I focused on the front, and now we’re not so leafy. John took the motorized option, and used the mower to shred the leaves and blow the shreds onto the ivy. I used the shovel to deconstruct the veggie bed, and the rake to re-situate leaves.

Not the complete autumn lockdown, but big strides….

Ants, away!

Rosa rose at mill by cistern

I’m assuming it’s the cold snap we had recently that put the ants in a dither. At least, “a dither” would explain them invading my kitchen.

Do ants like roses? I know they like peonies…. So, maybe there’s no connection between roses and ant food…. And that’s why they like my kitchen? Hey, the kitchen’s clean (enough!).

Historic prezz-err-vay-shun

Through twin towers Fulton cotton bag mill

We toured the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill this afternoon, shepherded by historic preservation consultant Bamby Ray (for real; well, she really goes by that—her “real” name is Muriel). The remaining buildings of the mill complex are now residential, and, despite the intervention of fire and tornado, have been capably rebuilt.

This view is east-southeast from a roof of one of the large mill buildings, through the two towers of the steam power generation complex, to its neighbor, the Oakland Cemetery.

It’s difficult to pick one picture to represent the many lovely views we had of the mill complex….
