Musings
Once again the overnight rain left the dawn-time cool (relatively speaking) and very humid. Along one block I smelled both camellias and lavender. Mmm.
In the Saturday-morn quiet I heard more “native” sounds. However, I heard nothing from the house-yard where I often discern chicken-clucking. In front of another house where I’ve never noted them previously, just barely, I did hear them.

The post-rainfall fungi cycle has brought us this pale yellow umbrella-type (and inky caps, no photo, among other gilled ’shrooms), and I couldn’t resist, um, boring you with it. That’s thyme it’s hanging with. The rainclouds have been spotty, however, and Lake Lanier (Atlanta’s water source) remains almost 8.2 feet low, as the clouds dance around the Lake, which has a pretty small catchment area.
* In fact, I think it’s an umbonate pileus.

What I noticed today is another round of fungi coming along—we’re in the early phase of quick-growing delicate species. However, low-light fungi pictures are yawn!, even when the specimens are brilliantly white. So, instead, I give you a wee architectural detail.

I love that I live in a neighborhood that would have a bar named The Family Dog.
To do list addition: go have a beer at The Family Dog (so I can say I’ve been there, instead of just “I’ve been by there”).

The fire-folk are fundraising—to stabilize and upgrade Atlanta’s oldest firehouse. Old buildings are expensive to keep. In this case, I understand the urge to keep rather than replace. This one suits the neighborhood, with all its architectural detail and rich-colored brick. Time to buy a t-shirt!

I don’t know if the figures are identifiable in this pre-dawn, exceedingly overcast crappy-light photo, but they are the Peanuts™ characters, arrayed in a schoolroom. This is the second conjunction of Peanuts™ in my recent life. The only paperback (I think) that I kept from the southern MI house is a Peanuts™ paperback, 26th printing, dated 1966, copyrighted 1950, 1951, and 1952. Snoopy looks rather different in the early rendition compared to the flag era, and the prominent non-Charlie, non-Snoopy characters are Shermy and Patty. It’s not surprising that the characters evolved; Schulz‘s strip ran for a half-century.

Went to late matinee (at the Tara) of the critically acclaimed “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and quite enjoyed it. Superbly crafted script and movie, casting and direction. Not always easy to watch for the emotional content, in a good way. I’m thinking it fits the general category of a “coming of age” movie (albeit quite different from the typical movie in that genre), but maybe your take is different….

Weather and remodeling over the decades mean that most of these concrete walks that were original to the Va-Hi bungalows in this neighborhood—including in front of our home—are now gone. I have walked past this house dozens of times, and this is the first time I have noticed that its walkway survives. I’ve always enjoyed the delicate rolled molded margins that no doubt stymie lawn upkeep.

Fitful sleep last night—after the storm came through (really this morning)—go figure! I left late on my loop, but not late enough to miss the moon! I found dead and live branches downed by the wind/rain, and even a huge clump of mistletoe (yes, under an oak).

Gardenia-time is beginning again, along with round three(?) of the azaleas. I found the scent faint this morning in part because there aren’t many blossoms open, but also I think because of the weather. Is dry better than humid?
