Musings

Roses, hypotheses

Roses whte fence

Winter roses, so decorative. Or merely autumnal?

Vine ladder

There’s evidence of a project gone awry. That vine has been twining for months to get that high! Or was the ladder placed for the vine and not for a chore?

Fungal flounces

Fungal flounces

Am I wrong? Do these not look like flounces?

Orange/pink day

Dahlias on fence

I have never grown dahlias, and I do like them. They remind me of oversized starflowers (aka star flowers).

SAD collapse

My conclusion when I saw this was that inflatable beasties can be afflicted with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I didn’t intend an orange/pink color theme, but lookee there!

Accidental scientist

Ginger flowers night

This morning I thought: I’ll walk this afternoon after I get some chores (especially laundry) finished.

Then, I heard that drippy noise that means rain. Ooooops.

After dark I realized that I didn’t have a photo for the day. Another ooooops! Then, outdoors, I had my phone flashlight on and saw (and smelled! inhale! enjoy!) a new crop of ginger flowers, and decided to take a night photo. Oh, I wondered, can I take a picture with the flashlight on? However, when I went over to the camera app, the light went out (pretty sure). Crappy photo yielded new data! Yay!

Wide Load Day?

Mountain rock cut

We were on the move again today, and finally got out of the weather system we were in, and into sunshine! Brilliant sunshine! And colorful leaves.

Oversizeload load

It wasn’t all sunshine, and this was during one of the cloudy stretches. We saw many semis, and what seemed to us to be lots of oversize/wide loads. This load was a bi-lobed molded swimming pool; this is the end view.

Was it actually Wide Load Day, and we thought it was only Election Day?

I’m proud of everyone who voted in today’s election! Truly.

Big transition

Droplet lens

A bit drippy, not quite full rainy, and not really cold-cold…tolerable to close up the cottage for the year.

Lake MI waves

We agreed that Lake Michigan, with waves pounding on the rip-rap and throwing up spray, and the grey skies above, looked like winter is not far off. [Plus the weather prediction indicated ❄️ for Friday. Yikes!]

Bridge pylon

Murky skies continued in the Lower Peninsula; then, eventually, it got dark, and we can’t watch the sky any longer. Roads are dry, however….

Plans in motion, beginning

Sunrise golden ball obscured

On my way to capture this golden sunrise…

Water barrel ice

…I saw ice on top of the water barrel.

Not too much later, the clouds rolled in and the sun became a bright spot behind the grey-blue, and late in the afternoon, which would have been a different time yesterday, the rain blew in.

So, time to mobilize. But, let’s round up odds and end first, and finish the closing activities tomorrow.

A fine day

White birch feathers

We had overcast this morning. All things considered, it wasn’t bad out, just not bright.

Rainbarrel reflection leaves

Then, the sky cleared and, whew!, lovely. Solar gain even made the porch toasty, so I read out there for a while.

Floor shadows

Meanwhile, inside, the wood stove was cranking (there is no slow or super-slow setting), and it was beyond toasty. In a good way.

Red barn mcmillan rd

We even made a quick run to the PO (Amazon Prime in the hinterlands only goes so far—sometimes—and yet sometimes they deliver to the house via brown—a curious variation?), and to the groc store—yoghurt needed!

Another tour of The Place

Swale field

Different grass grows in the well-watered swale, compared to the rest of the field.

Stump shelf fungus

Even smaller beings than these shelf fungi and the green, green moss are in the process of breaking down this stump. Dead-wood is becoming high-nutrient organic matter* in the soil.

Lake quiet

Today’s lake view photo. Light off-shore breeze means quiet waters.

* “Organic matter” was a favorite phrase of the Botanist.

Sunny moments

Lake view woods

While roaming today, I ventured into our woods. Here’s the view from the bluff across the likely-to-have-poison-ivy flats toward the lake.

Woods sentinels

The low angle of the sun means the opposite, 180° view is totally different. Almost bland in comparison, but actually quite interesting in the detail. Most of these trees are maples. I think.

Wood art lake

And today’s selected lake-view shot, across the tree-root art.

Chimney smoke

Rather nippy today (the sunshine you see in these shots was intermittent), so we have a fire in the stove. An internet search suggests it’s a coal furnace, so maybe that’s why it sometimes can be ticklish, tricky, and vexing to burn wood. Anyway, see the smoke? We are toasty; it got up to 89°, but is cooling now—just a pleasant 83° at neck height, less if you’re sitting. As I am.

Over and out.
