Up with rhodos and hemlocks

Ice face melting

We got high today, climbing the last bit on foot past noisy melting ice on this warm day on the dark side of Whiteside Mountain, in North Carolina.

Big view

This view is easterly, with Whiteside along the left side of the frame. To the right is South Carolina, as Whiteside is the last of the mountains, overlooking the piedmont.

So gorgeous. Such a lovely adventure.

Tough every-day fleur

Daisy energetics

I am so surprised to see this daisy hanging on in the face of seasonal-autumnal-transitioning-into-winter-ish (ish).

And pleased.

Listen…

Train tracks from below

Sometimes a different perspective is enlightening.

Bridge from below

I would have been happy without a train passing above, yet it was a bit of a thrill pounding by ka-thunk-ka-thunk-ka-thunk overhead.

Serrated loveliness

Acer color

We’re enjoying transitional autumn, with some lovely sunny days, along with lingering colorful leaves. Evidence here. [Not all days are this enchanting, duh.]

Rose hanging on

Front came through last night. Sometimes that means fine, clear weather. Today: no. Wind increased all day, and the sun barely came out at all when I walked, although I went out early enough to give it a chance.

Even though I encountered several noisy leaf-blowers, I did manage to enjoy my outing just a tad. Outdoors is oh-kay. And I found a lovely burgeoning rosebud.

Hot wheel

Hosta rosette

The sun came and went several times while I was out, always making me smile.

Lately I’ve been trying to up my daily sixty minutes to around seventy; my success has been uneven, although my (left) knee is holding up. Today I made seventy-four. Whoopee.

The title refers to the wintery transition we made, with our initial use this season of the steering wheel warmer (twice, actually). It came with the car; I don’t imagine we would have ordered it!

Movie night

Strangeplant

“Mank.” Worth the time. Terrific lines delivered extremely well. Well crafted. Big cast. Today’s news remodeled into historical fiction.

Strange plant in small, overlooked gas station bed.

Let’s be clear

Moss gate

I’m going for the purely aesthetic: this is a lovely mossy gate.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Natural history report

Ginkgo leaves down

I’m lousy at surveillance. I spotted this and one more ginkgo tree with fresh-dropped leaves, but I’m pretty sure the others, maybe a quarter mile away, still had their leaves.

I’ll check tomorrow. The legend of ginkgos all dropping their leaves the same day is at stake.

Extra vitamin D?

White azalea

In keeping with the winter-wise temperature transition, I have bowed to the gods of vitamin D, and I am now assuming that I will be wearing more clothing and exposing less skin on my outdoor ventures, and began this week taking supplemental vitamin D. (whew; run-on sentence nomination!).

However (echo: however), sunny today!)
