Mother-Nature confusion, v.23.4109b

algae_PiedPk_after_thaw.jpg

After the Lake Clara Meer algal scum froze, with its swirls distorted by crystals, it melted. I’m not sure of the process that lead to a dusting of white under-feathers….

The art of the freeze-thaw

algae_frozen_Pied_Pk.jpg

The low temps have changed Lake Clara Meer’s algae into crystal-sorted art. I especially like the spikey shapes mixed with the leaves and the melt-water.

Apparent B&W

shadow_on_ice_in_backyard_2011_Jan.jpg

Among the special qualities of being in Atlanta post-snow and -ice is the opportunity to enjoy light in a way that’s uncommon here.

For example, The Guru took (outdoor) night photos without a flash that came out great—all that reflected city light provided enough for a sensitive camera to capture nice pictures. (Sorry, no pictures—you’ll have to use your imagination.)

Here’s a morning-light moment, with the sun turning the backyard into B&W when it’s really in color….

What’s that across the bay?

Cedar_Point_across_bay_in_winter.jpg

View south-southeast across the mouth of Sandusky Bay.

We discovered (well, really: RE-discovered) that from the lighthouse in Marblehead you can see Cedar Point*.

Not Russia.

We’re talking Ohio and Lake Erie….

* WikiPee says the Cedar Point amusement park dates from 1840. Whew!

TECH NOTE: Maybe do the operating system upgrade to version 4.2.1 later.

Magic (flower) moment

light_through_yellow_flowers.jpg

I didn’t stop long enough by these flowers to do a good job of capturing the magic of the sunlight coming through the petals. Trust me, it was special.

Onward, and homeward

Brunswick_from_the_marsh.jpg

We left St. Simons, crossing the causeway, with clear evidence of modern civilization clouding the horizon above Brunswick, forming a visual welcome that we found bittersweet.

No Diving

pool_arc_oblique.jpg

I think that’s good advice—look before you leap and all that….

On the other hand, once in a while an episode of plunging ahead can pay off, too!

The “No Diving” sign is at the middle of the rear of the image, and you’d have to be pretty alert to notice it underfoot when you’re there to swim, I think. Or craning your neck to check out the other swimmers (this is midtown Atlanta, after all)….

Cloudiness reigns (somewhere)

lowering_sky_clouds.jpg

We crossed The Bridge under open skies, and as we motored south the cloud-cover came in, until the poufy (SP) blanket was nearly solid. Still, the shapes and color variation offered plenty of visual interest to the heavens.

Still life: apple tree with ladder

night_flash_ladder_apple_tree.jpg

The other night I tried some flash shots, and given that the only flash unit was standard-issue, right on the camera body, the lighting was, mostly, just plain odd. This was among the “better” of the collection….

I give you this picture because the weather is pretty darned odd so far. Cracking thunder and rain overnight. No rain now, but overcast, windy, and…warm! Spooky warm.

Aesthetic webs

spider_web_Sable_Creek_bridge.jpg

I am fascinated by the interplay of light on webs—is this my Charlotte the Spider connection?

From yesterday’s walk; too lovely to not post, especially since we made today a Chore Day, and eradicated much dust—and not a few cobwebs—from our aged cottage interior.
