Focus! Focus!

Wintery birdbath reflection

Rain overnight is moving up levels of Lake Lanier—Atlanta’s drinking water source.

I stripped the turkey carcass and have broth on the way. I managed to avoid letting it boil—just simmer—so it’s still clear. Yippee!

Mid-day, after post-turkey processing cleanup, the rain stopped and a pallid sun attempted to emerge. Taking advantage of what I figured was the best weather of the day, I made it over to Piedmont Park for a loop under once-again overcast skies.

Art is a philosophy

Sunrise in KY leaves off

The brilliant sun this morning made short work of the overnight heavy frost.

Art is a philosophy window gallery cafe

We took a bit of a wander climbing away from the Ohio River, and stopped for lunch at a friendly looking restaurant in Brookville (that’s Indiana—we skipped Ohio on this run). And, indeed, everyone we met in town was friendly, and The Gallery Cafe’s food was tasty. I had spicy chicken chili—no beans. JCB had a breakfast platter with this interesting German-style “sausage” called goetta (the meat is mixed with steel-cut oats and fried in a very thin patty; goetta is a Cincinnati area specialty). We dined happily under walls covered with art by local artists, mostly paintings and photographs, all for sale.

Spiky and fluffy (plants)

Abg still life spiky fluffy

Third day in a row I found it non-December warm. Pleasant, but I walked to the lib thinking we’re going to pay for this great weather. But I hope not.

Wish you were here!

Fresh key lime pie hot from oven

It’s nasty windy outside, with a shockingly cold edginess we haven’t experienced since last winter. Brr. We are lucky, however—preparing to dine with friends in a house extra-warmed by the oven…key lime pie for dessert!

Domino effect, v.21855

South of jackson northbound

We got just a couple of sun-burst moments today, and this was the first, when the grey of the sky was tempered and our tempers warmed.

Bloom clusters still vivid

Azalea of autumn still vigorous

I know my friends in Michigan are watching white stuff come down, but here it’s leaves that are airborne, and the persistent azaleas are still abloom. Nevertheless, we’re expecting the coldest night of the fall tonight.

Just say Haudenosaunee three times fast

Patio swing loveseat with autumn leaves

We sure aren’t ready for snow here (oooh, Colorado), but we did have some precip—after I took this shot around noon. I love when the leaves are down yet still are fluffy and colorful. Is it okay to describe dry leaves as fluffy?—you know what I mean—they’re not matted by rain yet. The difference by tomorrow morning will be…noticable.

Read a bit about the Northern and Southern Iroquois—umhm, Haudenosaunee—today….

– (sun, maples) + (rain, oaks)

Southern appalachians in the autumn rain

Continuing our southbound trek, we wound our way through and climbed up and down amongst the southern Appalachians. We not only drove into and out of clouds, we also splashed through real rainfall for a few miles. As we crested the last few bumps en route to Georgia’s Gainesville, we could see light beneath the cloud layer, and, indeed, when we drove into the MetroArea, we had no precip to make unloading more complicated.

BTW, yesterday we visited only eight states. Eight!

Glory, in flower and book

Is it a whitish canna lily huh

Despite yesterday’s fading leaf, today I found a happy late-season lily (canna?).

We visited a delightful independent book store—all kids books—over in Decatur—Little Shop of Stories (cute name; cute store), during our search for the legendary Pat the Bunny (by Dorothy Kunhardt—yes, I had to look that up). Pat dates back to 1940…. Little Shop—highly recommended.

Rainy day

We haven’t been able to say we’ve had a rainy day in a while, but we can/did today.

However, instead of presenting an interesting wet-plant photo, I am noting that my long-time favorite non-Keen sandals now are held together by a thread—well, two…the heel strap on the left….
