“Blowing in the wind…”

poppy_blowing_in_wind.jpg

Turns out the petals on this kind of poppy are pretty delicate, and the wind kept flipping them around, making it difficult for me to get a shot of the flower with the petals “open.”

Excess in food artistry

salad_tall_irish.jpg

Okay, I admit that this picture was from last night’s near-excess, in downtown EL. Actually, we were fairly sedate, although this shot may suggest otherwise.

I thought I was ordering a simple salad, but when it arrived it was perhaps the tallest Tall Food I’ve ever seen, or at least had placed before me. BTW, that’s salmon crusted with panko and almond slivers on the skewers, tripoded atop a mixed green salad with goat cheese bits and other goodies. And, I can’t forget the lemon slice tying the architecture together….

Otherwise, we mostly sipped Guinness, easing our way through the evening, and there was a luxurious spinach–artichoke appetizer, too—how could I forget that!

The wrapping for all this dietary fun, of course, were lots of laughs and some speculation about the current economics of Michigan’s automotive industry….

Three dollars

koi_eating_lily.jpg

Transition day today. Once again this year we left the cottage in the rain. Of course, by the time we got to the Straits, the road was dry although the sky remained overcast until we were somewhere south of Houghton Lake.

Interesting, these koi. The flower had begun to fade and they began to, periodically, tear it apart. What was the trigger that they waited until it was fading?

Why is it called Lady’s Slipper?

cow_parsnip_bloom_backlit.jpg

I tried to photograph a couple of the specimens of Pink Lady’s Slipper we saw in a little grouping, but the lighting was lousy. So, I substitute this image of what I’m pretty sure is a Cow Parsnip (not Poison Hemlock).

Also we spotted a bear today—thankfully from the car, not while hiking the Chapel Lake area trails….

“Daisy, Daisy…”

daisy_daylight.jpg

I had to imagine the singing to go with this near-sunset daisy.

Not-so-yellow goatsbeard

Time to try a night-shot again, when the flash makes the background black and sets off the foreground focus, if there’s not too much light….

Making the rounds

seney_NWR_grey_skies.jpg

I can’t remember the last time we made an early morning run to Seney to take the driving tour. We saw geese, loons, ducks, swans—the usual—plus a muskrat and a small night-heron, but we’re not sure which one.

Code 22:22

flower_in_orchard_somewhere.jpg

I don’t believe I’ve mentioned the 22:22 secret code, which now is 10:22 pm.

You see, when I first started this blahg, I had software that kept time with a 24-hour clock. And, because it was easy to type, 22:22 became my default time set if I couldn’t make my daily post on its correct day. I try to photo and compose each day, even if it’s in my head, and sometimes there’s no wifi or Internet to make it public.

So, now you know. Posts with the time 10:22 pm have a complex history….

Special light(s)

moon_watching_Man_Lk.jpg

I managed to stay awake and watch the moon over the lake, while a few celebratory fireworks exploded in glorious bursts high above the treeline on the far shore.

For reasons mysterious to me, the Curtis fireworks show will be tomorrow. Hello. The holiday is the Fourth of July—perhaps a rather inflexible name, but not at all the same as Weekend-of-the-Fourth Celebration.

Happy Jack’s

Jacks_Rapid_River.jpg

I get a happy feeling when I see the sign for Jack’s in Rapid River. I haven’t stopped since I can’t remember when, but we used to try to drop in about 10 am, when the pies were fresh out of the oven. Yum!
