Nestled peas

Botanist and pea pod

Before we left, I helped The Botanist with some chores. I had the most fun looking for the earliest fresh peas (English peas, they call them in the Deep South, to distinguish them from field peas). We also removed a few old dead raspberry canes from the plants Gail gave Dad the fall he had the triple bypass surgery, cut off canker infested limbs from the plum tree, and checked out the basil that I germinated and Dad transplanted into his garden.

Bridge view, late June 2011

Ft Michilimackinac bridge view

I discipline myself when I’m at the wheel and crossing The Big Bridge (speed limit 45 mph) to watch the road, so I thank my spouse for capturing this image of Fort Michilimackinac.

Minnows and mayflies

Fish flies and minnows 2011

I know it’s June, but the mayfly hatch must have just happened.

Lupine rock!

Lupin landia 2011 June

The lupine are…rampant this year, both in the orchard and across the field.

Guess it’s no longer any good for hay.

MTF from Meijer

Meijer moose tracks fudge ice cream

I’m not sure what a Michigan firm (Meijer) is doing promoting an Alaska-based flavor name (the Denali part)…and curious about what Moose Tracks Tee-Em Fudge might really taste like…although the phrase sounds better than Muddy Footprints Fudge (with or without the Tee-Em—and yeah, I know it says Arr, but that doesn’t have the same ring).

Those with long memories may recall that long ago in another lifetime I was a Meijer employee, although then it was Meijer’s Thrifty Acres and Old Fred was still alive.

A joy of spring

Happy empty strawberry icecream bowl

I was a happy-happy diner tonight, emptying this bowl—of crushed strawberries (straight from the Botanist’s garden) over ice cream (with no funky stuff in with the cream, milk, and sugar).

Coniferous

Construction zone cones WV 2011WV capital dome glittering in sun

As in: West Virginia is sure coniferous* this time of year.

Yes, many construction zones along the highway—mostly new paving, I thought, rather than, for example, bridge replacements. I even saw several landslides, none big enough to reach the pavement (whew).

As we came through Charleston, the capital dome gleamed in the sunlight, and I even caught a windshield shot without light poles, signs, and other visual detritus.

We wound up our day with Mr. B and the lovely KW, a quick social evening that suspended our family obligations and the grey clouds of life for a brief time.

I know blacktop reflects heat

Spanish moss a dangling

For a while this afternoon, the car said it was 100 big fat Fahrenheit degrees out. Then, for a little while it reported 102°F.

Sometime later it dropped to 97, and I began to feel better.
