Quiet, too quiet

Fern tip decorated

Well, almost. Our guests have been gone more than a day, and we are just rattling around in this small cottage. We had such fun with them!

Duty free!

Foreign land n power

We ventured forth into a foreign land in search of FIL’s fave Tanq—the 80-proof version you can’t get in the good ol’ US of A.

The usually harsh US of A customs/immigration person kept it brief in the question department, and even, when told we had six bottles of gin to declare, did not require us to get in line to pay duty!

Great tree!

Yes a tree

I am thrilled anew with the creativity of the younger set. This small set of legos has provided hours of entertainment for the Short Guy (yes, no PC Height-Challenged Guy language here), and not a bit for the Guru and I when we’ve heard the story each creation.

The narrative for this one is something about a guy (red) in a castle and a tree outside the castle along the avenue where the Bad Guys will approach.

Afterparty

Games de teenage males

One excellent thing about the Fourth party we attended was tonight’s afterparty with a lovely buffet of leftovers. Wonderful both the first and second time!

A small new crop of teens were uninterested in swimming in the lake (they’d spent the afternoon there), so, with wifi accessibility, they opted for a bit of gamesmanship.

Meanwhile, the Guru and the Dave-man conspired to keep a five-year-old guessing with a little clumsy-yet-successful magic that had him guessing. Maybe indeed the earache he’d had the week before did originate with the 2-inch penguin the Guru extracted from his ear….

Ruby rhubarb

Darkest ruby rhubarb evern

Today was the Fourth of July party of our year. We raided the five rhubarb plants that Dad planted years ago for these skinny stems, which K extended with a few frozen strawberries and fresh (domestic) blueberries—creating what we decided should be called a Patriotic Crumble.

Later, I consulted with D and C about rejuvenating the rhubarb plants. Conclusion—they need more light (cherry tree and shrubs encroach above), less competition (they’re overrun with tall grasses), and more nutrients (I’m to find aged horse, cattle, something manure…). I can see that my autumn has a new chore….

Still, we were so very happy we could make at least a small harvest, and share it!

Proxies lead to speculation

Lace curtain window

We read people through so many proxies. Through their choices of clothing, cell phones, and spouses…and home decor. I love the accent blue and the white lace curtains…but would I find the house’s people overly fussy? I’ll never know….

Feet (gone)

Sandals left behind temporarily

We heard that the weather would be almost as good today as it was yesterday, and so we reorganized our days to get out and about, rather than waiting for another day (when it may be raining). And the sand was hot!

Hiiiii-yaaaa

Bridge water jump

However dangerous it might be, somehow I am heartened that kids still jump off bridges into a lovely creek-river—in this case watched over by supervising adults.

Also saw bald eagle soaring

Fawn a running

Little guy/gal came within two meters of us, up in the grove. Over in the field, mom-doe was snorting/whistling/calling.

First (wading) of the year

In n out no burger

Today, our visitors who were to arrive tomorrow called and asked, would you be up for a schedule change? Of course. Of course!

And so they arrived later than normal a day early, but VERY happy to join us. And we are tremendously happy that they are here—and safely.
