Glossing over

Jungle leaf glossy

Seems like I had about seven ideas for what to write about today, and, pfft, I have not a one of them at this moment.

ABG redux

Strange bloom ABG

I don’t remember ever seeing a bloom quite like this before.

Orchid carousel

Orchid birds

Apologies; I didn’t even look for a name-tag so this is mystery-orchid.

I’m having a hard time getting these large and stunning orchids out of my head. They look like giant insects or strange birds to me.

No grief

Plant sur reality

Nepenthes pitcher.

Sometimes if you look at a plant from the right angle, and take away the context, you may struggle to figure out what you are seeing.

We are the norm

Saloon somewhere midwest

Archive photo, somewhere in the Midwest.

We’re getting our entertainment this evening from Amazon Prime and Netflix. And we don’t have cable.

We match our demographic.

Coated

Coated nascent physician

I’m not the first to say, “Sneakers? Really?”

Of course I knew coated could be a verb, but I didn’t know being coated is a (Western) physician ritual. It’s the reverse of wearing a graduation gown. We watched* a young man we know get coated yesterday, one in a class of 122. I was heartened that the speeches by physicians who are major mentors in the program indicated that an emphasized component of the program is listening, along with working to improve the health care system, not merely to treat the patients that are in front of you.

It’s Thai basil season

Thai tofu peas broccoli

On the theory that plants with strong flavors provide great nutrients and antioxidants and those bits that aren’t protein, carbos, or fat, I am always happy to add piles of Thai basil leaves to this dish.

Shine a light

Late day sun over centro

Yesterday.

I always understood that you were supposed to drain your laptop (and other device) battery every month or so to…essentially, keep the battery healthy. Today, I found out it’s just to keep the calibration of the software that tells you how drained the battery is up to date…and has nothing to do with battery life.

Of course, sometimes these things change….

Look: wingtips

Delta airborn

Not much excitement today, except an airport run to pick up a friend. Good views from the (kinda new) cell-phone lot…. I got this shot through the cyclone fence. I kept thinking it wasn’t much security, as one of the taxi-ways wasn’t far from our parking space.

Generous man

Detour sign on verge

I had two omens to the contrary, and still I pursued my dream.

I exaggerate.

You see, I had a letter to mail. And decided to walk it to the box. By two, when the pickup is.

I checked the clock and knew I was cutting it close, but suited up (as in, put on sandals) to walk to the PO.

Asked the Guru if he wanted to venture out. No, he said, it’s going to rain. Okay, I said, I’m going to chance it.

Halfway to the PO I saw this sign—the second omen that I was on an ill-fated adventure.

I made it to the PO, and dropped the letter in the slot at 1:59. Aha, I thought, just in time!

I celebrated too soon.

Five minutes later, amidst a deluge on my return leg, I buzzed the Guru, and asked for a pickup, wet but happy.
