Musings
NEX.
Plex.
This is older, but: PEX.
My conclusion: the “ex” ending is hot in product naming.
And secondarily: capitalization is flexible.
NEX is from Sony’s αNEX series of cameras—Sony’s impressive counter to the micro four thirds lines offered not long ago by Olympus and Panasonic.
Plex is software we’re using these days to replace cable, which we dropped over the winter (even though it’s a legit biz expense for Someone).
PEX is “cross-linked polyethylene” pipe or tubing. Think snap-together plumbing in the Great White North. Don’t ask what it may be leaching into the water (I tell myself).
Plex and PEX aside, my new camera lust* is the αNEX line (especially this one). Nif-tee!
* This in spite of the fact that we have three fine up-to-date digital cameras, including the iPhone.

The heat is back and the ’maters (Solanum lycopersicum) are doing their thing!
Meanwhile, the epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides, formerly Chenopodium ambrosioides) in the back yard isn’t getting enough sun, so it’s shooting up towards the heavens (excuse my lame sense of poetics) without making big leaves. Bummer.

I’m not sure why it strikes me that way, but the glorious scent of the camillias in our front yard is, frankly, inspirational. I might take my cocktail out there for a few minutes this evening just to, well, breathe it in! And relax….

The other day I mentioned we have dwarf, late-blooming azalaeas in the back yard, and I showed a picture of a white bloom. Here’s the orange one. And the strangest thing: at night, after dusk, the blossoms look deep fuchsia-pink.

Our low, as in less than two feet high, azaleas in the back yard are late bloomers, and they are just getting going in the heat that’s arrived this week.

This stuff is spreading! It’s a trio now!
I guess I should have expected that, since somehow it appeared in my garden.
Note that this plant was at the same stage on 7 May last year. For whatever it’s worth….
The meaning of “weed” in the title is from The Botanist: “any plant that’s growing where you don’t want it.”

Note the bumble bee-butt in the upper right of the bloom cluster.
Lots in bloom right now, including our rhodos, both the old one (white) and this year’s newly planted replacement—and the new one is indeed deep red-purple, just as labeled.
I’ve also noticed lots of vine honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.) in bloom, which has a nice smell, but is an annoying spreader, kinda the yellow cousin to the kudzu.
Enjoying the buzz over the FREE FREE! Neandertal-human genome mix report in Science (the glitzy—that is, popular—version is here, but watch out as it’s loaded with Flash). Best upon-release commentary I expect I’ll see is by John Hawks.

It’s back! (The Arum maculatum.)
So, Newsweek is for sale. Is the buyer getting much more than a name and falling sales/revenue?
The reporting, you wonder. Howze this: on the contents list, two pages tagged for Mrs. Bush, Mrs. 43. And the “full story” you flip to? One’s a Laura Bush notation on a scale (pure opinion). The other’s on the quote page. A dozen words, more or less. Takes longer to flip to the right page than to read these morsels.
I can honestly say that I don’t “read” Newsweek any more, I just flip through it. It doesn’t seem to have much reporting (beyond the cover story), and is heavy on opinion, rounded out with tidbits like the LB stuff.
Our last issue (no, it was one back) came as “New week.” They’ve lost more than reporting already.
In my opinion….

Is this really a passion flower? I keep thinking it is, but am not sure….
What’s in a weekend? Or, perhaps just a Saturday?
The Pres is off to UMich (watch out for the rust). The horses are running the mud track in Loooooooeeeeevuhl. I am musing on Roth IRA conversion (yawn)….

Warm today, and sunny. We are told to expect rain over the weekend. Then I need to get some barrier contraception (of a sort) installed around the tomatoes and peppers. I’m thinking I’ll follow The Botanist’s lead and use a layer of newspaper to keep weeds down and the moisture in.
For now, we’re looking at the end of the fancy large-bloomed azaleas. These specimens have flowers almost 10 cm across! The low varieties in the back yard have yet to bloom, though.
