Look closely

bulb_beginning_to_open_2010.jpg

I’m so glad I planted these bulbs; their burgeoning counterbalances the cold outdoors. If you look closely in the middle, you can see the flower bud parts.

For better/worse

bulbs_just_starting_out_inside.jpg

It’s probably a bit difficult to tell, but this is a little copper-colored pot with bulbs that I managed to get planted this week. There are two kinds of narcissus and some purple hyacinths (alternate spelling, according to the Apple Dictionary: jacinth*—didn’t know that!).

Question: is there a gene for plastic wrap? I mean, is there a gene that means you’re better/worse at managing plastic wrap in those critical moments between the beginning of the tear and the proper festooning of the correct target item?

My hypothesis: yes. And I have the “worse” version.

* And jacinth is a color, but which one? Reddish blue and deep purple are cited, along with deep blue…. If it’s a zircon stone, it’s red and transparent….

Winter signals

rosy_rose_with_droplets.jpg

We looped by the library today, in the mist (again, but warmer), so the light was crappy.

The biggest excitement during our walk had to be the huge V of sandhill cranes that cruised by overhead, yes, southbound. We heard them before we saw them, and both of us couldn’t quite place/identify the sound initially. JCB got a good shot of them, but I decided to go with a more colorful picture. This is one hardy rose.

Hot travel

leaf_large_detail_sidelit.jpg

Ran across a technical article about Yellowstone geology, especially how the caldera-hotspot has moved across the earth’s surface (from our point of view) over time. Here’s a WikiP image of it, and here’s a bit of a discussion of it….

All this seems a bit trivial, as I also have been thinking about Nancy and her partners, speed-making a movie over this weekend; technical name: challenge film-making…. It seems to me that a big part of the process is figuring how much you can arrange ahead of time—and doing it!, to leave time for the important parts that can’t be put off. Anyway, if her group’s film wins, it goes to Cannes for screening!

Rain, rain, more rain

azalea_in_winter_rain.jpg

Rainy day, all day. Mostly moderate or light, but not quite always.

Lake Lanier’s been at “full” pool level or above for the last six weeks—hard to believe the drought we had prior to that!

And, our backyard azalea is in bloom (again), to boot!

Weird, odd, and all that!

Stop flash now!

daisy_fuschia_in_autumn.jpg

I’m thinking Gerber daisy, but what do I know?

On a technology note, I keep forgetting to mention what a wonderful program ClickToFlash is. Download it here and take control of your Safari* browsing!

Regarding the big news around here, the election: we went to vote around 10:30 this morning, and I thought there were more people there than I expected, for a run-off election. Four races went to run-offs in our district, actually. A larger turnout is what the AJC is reporting, too….

* On a Mac, of course….

UPDATE: read thishere before you finish your ClickToFlash installation, as I mention later.

Fungi and gas prices

fungi_on_overcast_day_ATL.jpg

I gave in to the overcast weather today, and here’s a current photo, no sunshine.

I’m assuming this is true, but it’s been filtered through so many “he-said”s that the primary data was collected WAY down the line…. Anyway, Mike Morris in the online AJC reports:

Metro Atlantans began the holiday travel week paying nearly 20 cents less than the national average for a gallon of gasoline, but considerably more than last Thanksgiving, according a a Web site that tracks gas prices.

Usually, it seems to me, prices go up when there’re mass vehicular perambulations in this country.

So, with these prices, don’t be a mushroom and stay in the dark (or murk, or overcast)! Head out and get some fresh air!

Bad me! I forgot about the pot of aloe I scored when we were up north late last summer, and our neighbor’s been keeping for me! Oops.

Suits to a “T”

camellia_early_white.jpg

Here it is coming on late November, and I found a blooming camellia, not just with an odd bloom, but with flowers and buds all over.

You got the title, right? The best-known member of the Camellia family is Camellia sinensis, that is, the tea camellia. In addition, I’m sure glad to see blooms outdoors this time of year….

Aglow in autumn

Just happened to be in a bookstore this morning, picking up Candice Millard’s The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey (okay, for Book Club).

Report: there was a modest pile of That Book (which itself seems to contain a Modest Pile), and no one paying it any attention, let along hugging a copy while waiting in the cashier line!

…this in contrast to the frenzy reported from bookstores in the conservative hinterlands, like Grand Rapids.

Reflecting…

bald_cypress_in_autumn_LakeCM.jpg

I admit it; this photo’s from yesterday.

Today, it’s too overcast for this scene to be the least bit dramatic…bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) on the banks of Lake Clara Meer.
