Glowing heavens

ATL skyline sunset

See the dome of the tower at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta tucked in there? Never been, but I often find my eye is drawn to it….

Mostly, it seems to me, we get rain that’s a blanket across the region. Sometimes a broad strip of rain moves through. What we had today is rarer, just a few tiny storm cells. We drove from a not-rain area, across a not-rain area, and arrived at a just-rained area, on our trek to a small, fun get-together. We heard the hard rain stayed for just a minute, and was followed/preceeded by just a few minutes of sprinkles. No precip while we socialized, but a few sprinkles—enough to get the pollen off the windshield—as we headed back. Then, no-rain all the rest of the way.

Or maybe it’s that the broader rain areas are more winter and the small cells are more summer? Meaning we’re in the rain version of the transitional season?

Anyway, the skies cleared incompletely, and the sun after-glow gave us a gorgeous skyline view.

But what vermouth?

Bulleit rye label obliqueish

A minor wealth of djuknows here….

Rye, originally created from rye grain (Secale cereale), may not have as much rye in it today. Cheaper substitutions, a sweetened flavor profile, and all that.

And, if you use rye for a classic Manhattan, you need a maraschino cherry (do you say “shee” or “skee” for that middle syllable?), and that’s an interesting djuknow, too. The name, my dictionary says, comes from the words for bitter cherry. The jarred version we encounter, however, is made from a sweet cherry…with sweet syrup—very sweetened. I see that Amazon offers some maraschino cherries with reasonable ingredients lists….

A Friday tip-o-the-glass to ya!

Okay, for the trifecta, read about vermouth here.

Leaf it to…

Fern tip

Lemme stick to the…plants…ferns. I’m no good at…planning. Scheduling. Sheesh.

Cotes de provence label

Just wondering: one of the specialties of Provence is rosé, that is, rosé that isn’t sweetish, but a stand-alone tasty blend, and we sampled so little Provence rosé when we were there last fall…is that reason enough to push to return? To taste rosé? To argue for another France trip on the altar of planning….

Plus maybe if we returned I could learn to taste whether a rosé is made from Mourvedre or Cinsault or some other grape…. Just thinking ahead.

Random nutrients

Vitamin bottle collection

I lived one of those strange coincidences today—had to start new bottles of all but one of my supplements…that’s never happened before. I didn’t start them at one time. They don’t have the same number of doses per bottle.

Get it, huh?

Crystal find

The Guru and I share a Photo Stream, and I’m often finding gems there.

Swimming smallish tulips

Rain off and on all day made the tulips float. Still…miniature…but trying to open….

We did a Cinco de Mayo celebration of sorts tonight, under the assumption that independence is one of a range of conditions worthy of being honored.

We got a frozen red mole chicken dinner from TJs (never tried it before; rice gluey but kinda interesting/okay; whole dish fine), and I cooked down and pureed three cans of black beans to make refried beans (which are not fried, despite the name*). With guac as a salad, yum.

*Which otherwise might make the holiday Cinco de Fry-o?

Look sharp

Sharpie fakey

Don’t want to discuss server situation (total helplessness here).

Someone (initials: The G) made Sharpies. Such talent.

I don’t think this is a reaction to seeing a 3-D printer up close the other week….

Sip away

Vodka gimlet CU

Vodka gimlet.

It’s Friday and the server’s still not functioning. So, here’s a drink.

Reaching through time

Trumpety orangy flower

Server switch initiated by server-keepers this morning, and we’re not back yet. In honor of this 22:22 post, I give you a picture that’s also…aged…from last weekend.
