Okay, it’s autumn

We wandered today beneath Spanish moss, around interesting historic and prehistoric archaeological sites on St. Simons Island, off the Georgia coast at Brunswick. The various tour guides had us looking down—at building foundations, historic cemeteries, Indian mounds and more—and I also took the time to look up at the moss…gently swaying in the breeze.

During my walk this afternoon, I looped and rambled around residential areas near the house. I saw no cats and heard many barking dogs (most indoors). I saw quite a few fleurs, including small, simple roses in colors ranging from white to pink to dark pink to pinky-red.
Some front yards are already decorated for the upcoming scary holiday (not voting day in November, the October one), and I found this effort by far the most interesting. RIP for green jobs, tax cuts, talk radio, journalism, common sense, accountability, the dollar, carbon credits, small biz, and more, and, oh yes, in the back Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein.
And, by the way—no candidate signs in this yard….

I picked this image recently for my screen desktop. I thought I’d get tired of it in a week or so and move on, but I’m liking it more and more.
(For now.)
Doncha just love it as a decoration for the cake at an outdoor late-summer wedding? (Its actual use….)

In celebration of today’s coolness, the temperature kind, I took the iPhone for a walk, noting many fall flowers in bloom despite the dry conditions for part of the summer. I was pleased to pick up Paul Greenberg’s Four Fish at the library (and maybe we can get fish tacos if they’re on special at Doc Chey’s tonight…). I also found three guys hanging in the alley behind the homeless shelter (we said a polite “Good afternoon” to each other). I was very surprised to find a semi wandering around the residential neighborhood I trekked through, which was quite an undertaking considering the tight corners he had to negotiate.
Ya just never know what you’ll find if you look around your neighborhood with your eyes open!

The other night I tried some flash shots, and given that the only flash unit was standard-issue, right on the camera body, the lighting was, mostly, just plain odd. This was among the “better” of the collection….
I give you this picture because the weather is pretty darned odd so far. Cracking thunder and rain overnight. No rain now, but overcast, windy, and…warm! Spooky warm.

Okay, the infestation is spreading. This plant is about 1.5 meters from the one in the picture yesterday.
It’s east. But I don’t think this means anything about the prevailing wind.

’Tis milkweed season, and this infestation is taking advantage of…something. Two kinds of insects, and I’m not sure of their relationship, or their relationship to the milkweed they’re inhabiting. There are many milkweeds flourishing in the orchard, but this is the only one (well, and now its neighbors) that is hosting these insects.

Several times I’ve enjoyed puffball steaks, and it looks like it’s time to do so again. Ya just pick the globular beast, remove non-edibles (leaves, grass, soil), and sauté thick slices in a skillet—in butter if you can go cholesterol deluxe, creating fungi fun!
In figuring scale, remember the model has size 15s.

Here’s the very same bellflower (Campanula spp., perhaps the common garden bellflower C. rapunculoides) taken this morning; note the almost complete absence of the “hairs” I saw three mornings ago.
Clear, almost cloudless sky this morning. Heavy dew still drenches my shoes if I wander out much before noon. Life is good.
