Musings

Simple choices

Mango vs orange plus vodka

You know it’s a long story. The short version: mango or orange. Technically: orange vs mango.

Now, why the orange is…more vibrant than the mango…I’m not sure.

You’re an adult. You figure it out.

Fish Friday

Yellow carp scales aswimming

How good are you at recognizing a fish by its scales? Clue: this one was found in a (big, international) grocery store.

I didn’t buy him, selecting instead from the tuna steak and sushi-grade salmon.

Identified on the sign as “yellow carp” my guess is this is Cyprinus carpio, and it was farm-raised. And if WikiPee has it right, this is on the “Worst Invasive Species” list. And, may I say, dead (so not invading). Supposed to be tasty stewed in red wine.

Blue roses

Blue rose cake icecream

The weather lifted; our schedules opened…and we finally celebrated my FIL’s 88th (think: piano keys and counties in Ohio).

Lady N brought dessert—the cake had gorgeous blue roses.

We dined well. Fêting happened.

Everyone smiles…

Jarritos x two

Scary hands…scary smiles….

Actually, if you like fruity sodas, as I recall, Jarritos Mandarin is pretty tasty. And I’m not much of a soda fan….

Archaeology in service of advertising…scary most every time, ¿no?

And the colors…

Lemon lime TJs

Citrus are…sacred. Wonderful in winter…and in summer…and in the transition seasons…. Today, they cheered me.

Breakfast-dinner

Blueberry pancake dinner

Punted on traditional meal prep tonight, and made bleu-berry pancakes and fried eggs for dinner. Simple is güd.

(Sometimes.)

Sage, indoors

Yerb pot

This winter’s science experiment is holding on (barely, I think). Thyme anyone?

Streeeeetch your mind

Green food cheese mints

Here’s proof that green food is more than vegetables.

The cheese wheel-ette is from a Georgia dairy, and three mints have loads of antioxidants.

So there….

Food dicho*

Savory herring

Love the Mother Russia sentiment at the top: “make youre day savoury” (spell check is on edge about two of the words).

There are worse words to live by…but I’m not sure I’d turn to oily herring steaks to make my life more savory, at least not first. Or second. Or third….

* Dicho is Spanish for saying/adage. Like “don’t count your chickens…” and “takes one to know one,” that kind of thing.

Happy merry

Xmas dessert

We all ate too much before dessert, then stuffed ourselves again. Yes, two kinds of pie—pecan and pumpkin (Libby’s recipe, tweaked)—plus double-chocolate cookies and bourbon balls.

Fine family feast….
