Musings

I’m not big on Honda bikes, particularly, but this logo with the extra outlines (or whatever they’re called) caught my eye. And, so, I pass it along to you!

I think that’s good advice—look before you leap and all that….
On the other hand, once in a while an episode of plunging ahead can pay off, too!
The “No Diving” sign is at the middle of the rear of the image, and you’d have to be pretty alert to notice it underfoot when you’re there to swim, I think. Or craning your neck to check out the other swimmers (this is midtown Atlanta, after all)….

I find the word “finial” a bit odd, strange, peculiar, and just a tad freaky. So, here’s my attempt to de-mystify the finial, by making it just plain strange. Of course, the decorative kerfs in this wooden example pretty much make it impossible to tell just what this is in this close-up.

During my walk this afternoon, I looped and rambled around residential areas near the house. I saw no cats and heard many barking dogs (most indoors). I saw quite a few fleurs, including small, simple roses in colors ranging from white to pink to dark pink to pinky-red.
Some front yards are already decorated for the upcoming scary holiday (not voting day in November, the October one), and I found this effort by far the most interesting. RIP for green jobs, tax cuts, talk radio, journalism, common sense, accountability, the dollar, carbon credits, small biz, and more, and, oh yes, in the back Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein.
And, by the way—no candidate signs in this yard….

I picked this image recently for my screen desktop. I thought I’d get tired of it in a week or so and move on, but I’m liking it more and more.
(For now.)
Doncha just love it as a decoration for the cake at an outdoor late-summer wedding? (Its actual use….)

I was take-my-breath-away surprised when I came across this photo in our master photo set (now over 70K). Happily so.
This was the altar of don’t-touch when I was little, and when I was really little, I couldn’t really see the bench-top, so that added to the enticing mystery.
Eventually, I undertook not a few projects here, although my brother was a far more frequent user than I.
In fact, the light was my teen-years desk lamp, painted soft yellow (to match the day-core, doncha know?) by yours truly. (Not sure when it migrated to the workbench….)
So, thanks, Guru, for this surprise.

Now there’s a lotta ’maters!—truck we saw last week on Interstate–75.
Today, it was a microwave that died.
Some might argue that it had died long ago, and that we kept it going on the microwave version of life-support.
Here’s the deal.* J&R moved north to Indiana and took the microwave with them. But the lovely house they bought had a built-in microwave, and they stored it in the garage. We were visiting and mentioned that we needed a new microwave, and voila! we received the traveling microwave.
Happy with our replacement unit, we drove it home and installed it, noticing that the little readout screen had become, well, wonky. The Guru described it for years as displaying in Chinese. In short, you had to know what you punched in, because you couldn’t read the time-remaining.
And today it was microwaving away, warming some pod-peas for our luncheon soup, and I happened to be nearby and noticed that the sound changed, just a bit. That new sound lasted maybe two seconds, and the machine went quiet and the Chinese was replaced by pure black.
No breaker problem. No problem with the plug.
Scientific conclusion: dead microwave.
We are considering a combo countertop microwave-convection oven; anyone have any experience with the current models?
* This is how I remember it; others may recall the microwave tale differently.

In celebration of today’s coolness, the temperature kind, I took the iPhone for a walk, noting many fall flowers in bloom despite the dry conditions for part of the summer. I was pleased to pick up Paul Greenberg’s Four Fish at the library (and maybe we can get fish tacos if they’re on special at Doc Chey’s tonight…). I also found three guys hanging in the alley behind the homeless shelter (we said a polite “Good afternoon” to each other). I was very surprised to find a semi wandering around the residential neighborhood I trekked through, which was quite an undertaking considering the tight corners he had to negotiate.
Ya just never know what you’ll find if you look around your neighborhood with your eyes open!

My day was filled with Chores, which may be dreaded but are Very Important.
So, lacking a picture from today, I reach back nearly two weeks to show you a Odocoileus virginianus buddy (actually with friends, or, more likely, family), visiting the side yard Up North (sorry for the phrasing, but it’s common, and commonly understood to boot, so I bow to the popularity factor…).
Now, of course, I’m Here In The City, and enjoying an evening With Relatives, which is a very fine and happy thing.
For tonight, Over and Out.
Please excuse the excess of capitals, but we recently traveled through rural areas, where capitals are Emphatic, or at least…um…trotted out from the signage Bag-O-Tricks, and my Sense-O-Capital-Meter is outta-whack!
Plus, it’s been windy since early this aft and I’m discombobulated!

I spent way too much money (maybe; depends on how you assess these things) and got fancy high-tech specs—both the frames and the lenses have options I’d not dreamed of when I began wearing glasses…. The frames even came with an authentication card!
Here’s the kicker: they weigh 0.30 ounces/8.5 grams!
Hint hint: note the similarity of this pair of eyes with the ones in the blog-header photo (behind the word “musings”)….
Geeezo, look at them eyebrows!
