This beastie strongly prefers being an indoor cat, I’m convinced. Still…he train-watches.
In part, this is for you, Jeff.

I know these aren’t the only two pointy-bridges, but we traversed one northbound, and here’s the southbound one…effectively bookending our trip.

Once again the volunteer tomatoes are forging ahead in the summer growing season, boosted at the moment by a good, soaking rain. May I claim that they’re just starting to tinge golden?

One fine benefit of being home is the different cooking resources—both ingredients and tools.
This is a fakey-fakey version of the tuna curry (in a lovely foil pack) that TJs has discontinued (comment on this deficiency on their website, if you’re a fan, and they may well bring it back; they did once before).
The common part is that it uses a Thai curry sauce that’s a TJ product.
The differences…um, tofu instead of tuna; small tomatoes instead of red pepper. The whole thing is goosed with Thai basil, fresh from the garden, along with some frozen peas, my favorite obvious “secret” ingredient these days….
Whole concoction: very much enjoyed.
I haven’t forgotten I have promised the radish recipe. Just trying to keep you coming back! ;-D

Long story short, we stopped at Laney Cemetery (36.86073,-82.61422) to stretch our legs and just be curious. We discovered that the grounds were freshly mowed—we could still smell an overpowering fresh grass odor. Not sure why, but the mowers (that is, the people controlling the mowing machines) had blown the wet, mashed/cut grass onto the grave markers and decorations, including this angel—and just left the organic decorations in place.
Loved the detail on the wings.

Touring the scenic byways of the Midwest reveals, among other things, idiosyncratic architecture. The neighbor of this windmill-like domicile (apparently once a truck stop) is the House of Chrome. No lie.

I have heard many people argue that the USA is regional, yes, but also pretty much the same everywhere. Please note that I cannot image even one row of this canned good in a typical grocery in rural Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, or even New Mexico…yet a town of less than 3K in hinterland Michigan stocks TWO faces of 14 oz kraut juice. Yum.

Me bro weeded the strawberries for the Botanist, and the Botanist was much happier looking out at the weeded patch. And, with the reduced competition, the berries are producing, although the Botanist would have been disappointed in the size. Yet the flavor is fan-tassss-tic!

You knew I had to try the lupines with a flash. EEeeyh. Need better specimens, and more time. The light drizzle kept me from dilly-dallying.

Unsure of how many critters would be out, we still made a mid-day, almost-spitting-rain visit to the Seney refuge. We saw an osprey (head of female incubating) in the nest, ubiquitous Canada geese (including goslings), trumpeter swans (including cygnets), many common loons—the usual assortment. The whiteboard on the visitor center noted wolf and beaver sightings in recent days.
That’s her/him, in the foreground.
We spotted the more modest muskrat; what strong swimmers they are! Surprised to find us as s/he crossed our path en route to a different pool, s/he opted to continue, and cross the pool straight-line with no deviations, despite the distance to the next solid ground, an island over one hundred meters away.
